LIBERTINOS
The Libertinos engage the enduring relationship between the artist’s homeland and its supernatural encounters. He recalls the oral histories of his home altering his perception of what a darkened landscape was. Now, he revisits this influence to understand why the lands surrounding him held so much information, even when completely obscured.
He believes the curiosity sparked by these vast spaces was driven by a desired freedom that could only exist in darkness and was seemingly being experienced by otherworldly beings.
The artist mimics the movements of those beings as described by others, creating imagery that resides in alternative histories where people are liberated from light sources and the gaze they bring. Within these histories, they are free to move and roam the land in any manner they desire.

Artist’s statement from the exhibition at SOMArts:
“My mother told me a story once about how her aunt came face to face with what she called an “otherworldly being” while she walked through a cornfield one night. My mother said her aunt never spoke about it again… From this story and many others, I have developed a conclusion.
The overly free creatures that roam the night are not human. They are otherworldly and have no responsibilities to our morality, a morality set in motion by the powerful.
I call them Libertinos (Libertines)! They have been freed from light, both natural and artificial.”
